Factors Setting the Tone for Hasbro (HAS) in Q1 Earnings (Revised)

Read MoreHide Full Article

Hasbro, Inc. (HAS - Free Report) is scheduled to report first-quarter 2018 results on Apr 23, before the market opens.

Last quarter, the company’s earnings surpassed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by 26.4%. Also, it has an impressive earnings surprise history, having outpaced the consensus mark in each of the trailing four quarters, with an average of 16.5%.

What to Expect?

The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the quarter under review is pegged at 34 cents, which is considerably lower than 43 cents in the year-ago quarter. Notably, the consensus mark has also witnessed downward revision of 2 cents over the past seven days. Moreover, analysts polled by Zacks expect revenues of nearly $826.2 million, down 2.7% from the prior-year quarter.

Toys “R” Us Bankruptcy & Sluggish Growth in Europe a Concern

From the above discussion, it is apparent that Hasbro’s top and bottom lines are expected to decline year over year. Also, the company’s results are likely to be impacted by liquidation of Toys “R” Us, a significant U.S. toymaker. In September 2017, Toys "R" Us filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, given increased headwinds such as huge debt and heightening competition. The insolvency adversely impacts Hasbro and other significant toymakers like — Mattel and JAKKS Pacific — as each of these companies generate almost 10% of their overall sales from Toys “R” Us.

Furthermore, the company’s revenues from European region, which witnessed a decline of 2% in fourth-quarter 2017, are likely to remain under pressure in the quarter to be reported.

However, revenues at the U.S and Canada segment are expected to increase backed by  strength in the company’s Franchise Brands, Hasbro Gaming and Emerging Brand. The International segment’s revenues should see an upside from solid Franchise Brand and Hasbro Gaming revenues across Latin America and Asia Pacific. Also, the Entertainment and Licensing segment’s revenues are projected to improve on the entertainment initiatives and higher consumer product sales.

Hasbro, Inc. Price, Consensus and EPS Surprise

What Does the Zacks Model Unveil?

Our proven model does not show that Hasbro is likely to beat earnings estimates this quarter. This is because a stock needs to have both a positive Earnings ESP and a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), 2 (Buy) or 3 (Hold) for this to happen. You can uncover the best stocks to buy or sell before they’re reported with our Earnings ESP Filter.

Hasbro has an Earnings ESP of -2.94%. Although, the company’s Zacks Rank #3 increases the predictive power of ESP, we need to have a positive ESP to be confident about an earnings surprise.
